About the Department

The Department of Zoology at Karim City College was established in the year 1978, as a part of the Science Stream, initially offering BSc Zoology Pass Course. Over a period of time the course contents were enhanced to include BSc Zoology Hons in 1981 and Vocational courses in Aqua Culture was added in 2007.

Integrated teaching and learning process is the hall mark of the Department. Versatility in teaching and learning methodologies are adopted with a view to impart wholistic learning and developing a well rounded personality.

Active learning strategies such as tutorial classes, group discussions , book reviews , e-assignments and seminars are held regularly with active participation of faculty and student bodies to develop a keen sense of enquiry and investigation.

The Department has also established a “ Zoology Club” to foster a culture of participation, collaboration and develop the spirit of scientific inquiry among the students. The club organizes regular events such as lectures by renowned scholars in the field, debates , quizzes , visits to other institutions of repute.

Learning is also accomplished through regular educational excursions and through specially designed courses for the skill enhancement in apiculture, sericulture and aquaculture which gives an insight to students regarding various career options through Zoology.

Scientific talks on relevant topics through eminent academicians of their respective fields are organized for knowledge reinforcement and grasp of the students.

Currently there are three faculty positions and two non teaching positions. The Department has a unique distinction of having all female faculty.

Department has a good infrastructure and well equipped laboratory with Computers with internet connectivity, Projector , Traumoscope, BOD incubator, Deep Freezer, Spectrometer, Flame photometer, Micrometer and incubator , Compound Microscope , Research Microscope , binocular etc.

Department also maintains a rich collection of local and exotic fauna to expose students to the diversity of animal kingdom.

Our vision is to establish Zoology Department, Karim City College as a leading institution in Zoological education empowering students with a comprehensive understanding of animal life, behavior and ecosystems.

Mission of Zoology Department

Our mission at the Zoology Department is to provide quality undergraduate education fostering curiosity and passion for the animal kingdom, through engaging teaching , hands on experiences and community involvement , we aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in Zoology and related fields. Our commitment extends to cultivating a sense of responsibility for wild life conservation and ethical treatment among our graduates.

Apart from pursuing a higher study in the field of Zoology, a no. of career opportunities are available to the graduates of Zoology in both private as well as Government sectors, especially in research, forestry, environmental management etc. Some of the top career opportunities available in Govt. and private sector are listed below

Research Scientist : Conducting research in various fields, such as animal behavior, ecology or genetics.
Widlife Biologist : Studying and conserving wildlife species working in natural habitats, or wildlife reserves.
Zoo Curator : managing and organizing exhibits in zoos and ensuring the well being of animals and educating the public.
Veterinarian : Specializing in the treatment and care of animals , both domestic and wild.
Marine Biologist : Studying Marine life including fish, mammals and ecosystems in oceans and seas.
Conservation Officer : Working towards the protection of endangered species and their habitats.
Ecologist : Studying the interactions between organisms and their environment, often focusing on ecosystem.
Educator / Teacher : Teaching zoology at schools , colleges or educational institutions.

Departmental History

Establishment (1978):

The Zoology Department was founded under the tutelage of Dr. Manzer Hasnain in the year 1978, who also joined in the same year as a lecturer, marking the inception of a dedicated academic space for the study of zoological sciences.

Commencement of Zoology Honors (1981):

The department began the honors course in Zoology in 1981, shaping the foundation for years of scholarly exploration and scientific inquiry.

Introduction of Vocational Course in Aqua Culture (2007):

In 2007, a significant milestone was achieved with the initiation of a vocational course in aqua culture. This addition expanded the department’s offerings, catering to the evolving demands of the field and providing students with specialized knowledge in aquatic sciences.

Current Curriculum Alignment with NEP:

Presently, the department ensures a contemporary and comprehensive educational experience by aligning its curriculum with the National Education Policy (NEP). This commitment reflects an ongoing effort to stay abreast of educational advancements and provide students with a curriculum that meets national standards and priorities.
