Women's Cell

The Women’s Cell is a student’s body of the institution moderated by teaching staff members. It was established with the objective of catering to gender-related issues within the campus, to ensure gender equality and to foster gender awareness. In addition, the Cell also takes cognizance of complaints related to sexual harassment in the campus and seeks to offer redressal and justice pertaining to the same.

In its Teachers’ and Students’ Committee, the Cell ensures representation from the various disciplines of Humanities, Science, Commerce, Mass Communication, and C.A.I.T. departments. Both boys and girls are members of the Cell and take active part in conceiving, planning, and executing its activities throughout the year.

The Cell attempts to spark conversations around gender through various academic and cultural activities which include sensitization sessions, lecture/talks, essay and poetry competitions, drama performances, craft competitions and exhibitions etc.

Over the years, the Cell has made its presence felt through healthy gender conversations and a campus free from gender bias.

History:

The Women’s Cell was constituted in the year 2013 in accordance with a mandate from the UGC. In order to ensure smooth functioning of the teaching and learning process in a campus free from any gender bias, the Cell was charged with the task of paying special attention to gender needs and ensuring gender equity and harmony in the campus.

Grievance related to women are addressed by Internal Complaint Committee formed in 2016. The sole mission of the Cell is to protect the rights of female students, faculty members, and staff members of the institution, It is an active committee comprising of staff members & students of college to prevent sexual harassment, promote well- being of all the female students & staff member and create a gender sensitized community within campus as well as in the society.

Gradually over the years, in inculcate social responsibility among the students, more extension and collaborative activities are being organised.

Vision:

The Cell’s motto is ‘HER: Harmony through Equality of Respect’ and its vision is to foster an ecosystem of healthy ideas and conceptions with regards to gender. The Cell hopes that a young generation of gender-conscious students will reject stereotypes and shape new ideas in education, career and society, laying the foundation for a better world. It has succeeded in fostering harmony in the campus by ensuring respect towards both men and women through gender activism.

  • To include men in gender sensitization campaigns to bring about positive shift in mind-set and ideology.

Activities

SESSION:  2023 – 2024

  1. SANITARY PAD DISTRIBUTION AND HEALTH AWARENESS DRIVE: The Women’s Cell of Karim City college in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of the college carried out period product and Sanitation Awareness Drive in Guru Nanak High school Sakchi on 13th October 2023. Sanitary pads were distributed and a talk on Personal Hygiene and Sanitation was given by the coordinator of Women’s Cell on the occasion. 120 packets of sanitary napkins were distributed on the occasion. The female students also interacted with the students of the school. 34 students participated in the event.
  2. LECTURE/TALK: Women’s Cell organised a talk with an alumnus of the college on Women Inspiring Women: Conversations on Empowerment was held on 7th November 2023. Shreesti Kumari, Senior copywriter in the Advertising Industry. She shared her experiences in the advertising industry and how students who are good at writing can get into his industry. It was the first session of the talk centering around Women in Advertising.
  3. LECTURE/TALK: Women’s Cell organised a talk with an alumnus of the college on Women Inspiring Women: Conversations on Empowerment was held on 7th December 2023. Pooja Sannigrahi, National Medalist in Strengthlifting shared her experiences in sports. She shared her experiences in sports and how students who are good at writing can get into his industry.
  4. DIGITAL POSTER COMPETITION: On the occasion of Human Rights Day, a digital poster competition was held on 10th December 2023. 35 boys and girls participated in the event enthusiastically.
  5. GUFTAGU: COME AND TALK Conversation on Men Will be Men but Differently So. It was organised on 14th  The event began by a slide presentation on the activities of the cell by Sana Wakil, a student representative of the cell. Dr Kauser Tasneem, the coordinator of the Women’s cell introduced the topic to the audience. She said that it is time to dismantle myths and redefine them. The gender roles are defined by the society and we should try to make an inclusive society. The key- note speaker was .Mr Harsh Nil, Story Teller and Film Maker. It was a very interactive session and it benefitted many students .Dr Md Reyaz, te principal of Karim City College spoke about the importance of gender roles in society.173 students participated in the event as audience.
  6. ESSAY COMPETITION: The annual essay writing competition “Remembering the Stalwarts – Inculcating Pride in Indian Womanhood” was held on 28th February 2024. This year’s topic was Remenbering Savitribai Phule.  78 students took part in including 49 female students. Dr Subhash Gupta, Prof. Issa Gauhar, Prof. Om Prakash Singh Deo and Prof Saket Kumar were the judges of the event. The following was the result of the event.
  7. COMIC SCRIPTING COMPETITION: The Comic Scripting competition “Goonj” was held on 28th February 2024. This year’s theme was Educational Rights. The following was the result of the event. 23 students 11 boys took part in the event.
  8. COOKING WITHOUT FIRE: In this category, 2 events were held – Salad Dressing and Sandwich Making. Dr Anwar Shahab was the judges of the event. 92 students including 14 boys took part in the event. Te event was held on 4th March 2024.
  9. POETRY COMPETITION: The annual Poetry competition Awaaz was organised for the session and the last date of submitting n the self-composed poetry was 29th February 2024. Total number of submissions in English, Hindi, Bangla and Urdu were 116.
  10. SCRAP CRAFT: The topic was Bookmark and the date of submission was 29th February 2024. 60 students participated in the event. Date of submission was 29th February 2024
  11. INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY: Women’s Cell observed International Women’s Day on 7th March 2024. The speaker was Mrs Shalini Sulakshana, Head, Corporate Ethics, TATA STEEL. Observed as an Ode to Stent. Dr Mohammad Reyaz, principal of Karim City Collee welcomed the Guest . A brief cultural event was organised on this occasion. Muskan and Sonal gave a beautiful dance presentation. Ayush Mitra san a beautiful son The event was followed by prize distribution of the Annual Completions. 183 students benefitted from the talk.

HEALTH AND HYGIENE AWARENESS DRIVE: Women’s Cell of Karim City College in collaboration with the National Service Scheme of the college organised a Health and Hygiene Awareness Drive in CK + 2 School on 9th March 2024 at 11 am. The coordinator of NSS Dr Aaley Ali initiated the event and importance of menstrual hygiene was explained by the coordinator of Women’s Cell.
  14. TREE PLANTATION DRIVE: WOMEN’S CELL organised a tree plantation drive on 28th June 2024 at People’s Academy High School.
  15. VISIT TO AN ORPHANAGE: A visit to an orphanage was organised by Women’s Cell on 30th June 2024. The team visited Missionaries of Charity in New Baradwari.

 

2022-2023

  1. OLD AGE HOME VISIT: Women’s cell team of 18 students and 3 teachers visited Aashirwad- Old age home as a part of the social responsibility. The members interacted with the senior citizens and distributed fruits, biscuits and game. A brief cultural event was also presented by the students. The event took place on 1st November 2022. The senior citizens also participated in the event by singing songs and making posters.
  2. FITNESS WORKSHOP: A Fitness workshop was organised for the students on 23rd November 2022. The event was inaugurated by the principal of the college, Dr Md Reyaz. The fitness trainer was Mr Dev Kumar, Zumba, Strength workout and Cardio trainer. 156 students participated in the event. The event began with a talk on Health Psychology by Dr Firoz Ibrahimi, Sports Incharge and Head of the department of Psychology, Karim City College.
  3. TALK ON HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY: A talk on Health Psychology by Dr Firoz Ibrahimi, Sports In-charge and Head of the department of Psychology, Karim City College.
  4. SPEECH COMPETITION: A speech competition was held on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Aagainst Women on 25th November 2022.
  5. NUKKAD NATAK: Women’s Cell in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Karim City College organised a Nukkad Natak entitled Teesri Awaaz on 10th December 2022. The natak was staged in Sakchi golchakkar.
  6. GUFTAGU: COME AND TALK: Women’s Cell organised Gutagu- an interactive session on 14th December 2022. The key-note speaker was Dr Tufail Ahmad, Head of the department of Physics, Karim City College.250 students participated in the event..
  7. ANNUAL LECTURE/TALK ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT: The annual Lecture/Talk i.e.  “Plaiting Ideas : Women and well-Being” was held on 19th December 2022. on Prevention of Sexual Harassment. The speaker for the event was Ms Preety Sehgal, Chairwoman CII IWN, Chapter Jharkhand. It was an intearctive session. 170 students participated and benefitted from the discussion.
  8. ESSAY COMPETITION: The annual essay writing competition “Remembering the Stalwarts – Inculcating Pride in Indian Womanhood” was held on 14th March 2023. This year’s topic was Remenbering Mahasweta Devi. 
  9. COMIC SCRIPTING COMPETITION: The Comic Scripting competition “Goonj” was held on 14th March 2023. This year’s theme was Cyber Crimes Against Women. Prof. Badr Ahmad was the judge of the event.
  10. ANNUAL POETRY COMETITION: In March 2023, the annual poetry writing competition was held. This year’s topic was “Space.”
  11. NO FIRE COOKING COMPETIION: In this category, 2 events were held – Salad Dressing and Sandwich Making. Dr Anwar Shahab was the judges of the event. 92 students including 24 boys took part in the event.
  12. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: International Women’s Day was observed by the Cell on 16th March 2023. Students as well teachers expressed their views on the importance of the occasion. The chief guest of the vent was Dr Rima Dey, Scientist and Career Elevation Coach. 166 students participated the event.
  13. MUSKAN-SLIIPPER DISTRIBUTION DRIVE: Women’s Cell in collaboration with the Rotaract Club of Karim City college held a Slipper Distribution Drive in SakchiGolchakkar on 20th April 2023. 54 students participated in the event.
  14. CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY: DIGITAL POSTER MAKING COMPETITION:, Digital Poster Competition was held on 24th May 2023.
  15. CELEBRATING MOTHER’S DAY SPEECH COMPETITION: Speech Competition was also held as a part of celebrating Mother’s Day. 16 students participated. It was followed by a talk by prize distribution of the events

 

2021-2022

  1. ANNUAL ESSAY COMPETITION: Women’s Cell organised it annual Essay Writing competition “Remembering the Stawart : Inculcating Pride in Indian Womenhood” on 5th March 2022. This year’s theme was “CELEBRATING LATA MANGESHKAR”
  2. ANNUAL COMIC SCRIPTING COMPETITION: Women’s Cell organised its annual Comic Scripting Competition Competition GOONJ on5th March 2022. The theme of the event was “HONOUR KILLING”
  3. ANNUAL POETRY COMPETITION: This year’s theme was”REBEL/BAAGHI.”
  4. LECTURE ON WOMEN AND LEGAL RIGHTS: Online A special Web Lecture lecture was organised by the cell on Women and Legal Rights. The speaker was Samina Fatima, Legal Advisor and Contract Specialist on 15th February 2022.
  5. ANNUAL LECTURE/TALK : Annual Lecture/Talk: The annual Lecture/Talk “Plaiting Ideas : Women and well-Being” was held on 8th June. The speakers for the event was Ms Shalini Sahay, Statistician, Educational Assessor and Auditor.
  6. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY” International Women’s Day was observed by the Cell on 8th March 2022. Students as well teachers expressed their views on the importance of the occasion. The chief guest of the vent was Dr Sarmishtha Palit Sagar, chief scientist and group leader, NDEMM Group, National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur. 225 students participated in the event.

 

2020-2021

  1. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD : On 11th October, Women’s Cell observed the International Day of the Girl Child with the objective of sensitizing the students about the role a girl child plays in society. It was an interactive session where the students freely shared their views. It was an Online event due to Covid.
  2. INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY: On 10th December, Human Rights Day was observed by an awareness drive to make the students aware of their Fundamental Rights. It was an online event.
  3. ANNUAL LECTURE/TALK: The annual Lecture/Talk i.e. “Plaiting Ideas : Women and well-Being” was held on 27th June 2021 by the GoogleMeet. The resourse person was Madam Ishani Paul, SP, Krishnagar, West Bengal. She spoke on Women’s Safety in Social spaces.
  4. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: International Women’s Day was observed by the Cell on 8th March 2021. Students as well teachers expressed their views on the importance of the occasion The theme was “An Ode to Strength. The chief guest of the event was Madam Taruna Mishra, National Boxing Champion and Inspector, Jharkhand police.
  5. COUNSELLING: Counselling on Social Prejudices was organized in the online format where two recourse persons, Dr Richa from Patna Women’s’ College and Dr Varsha Singh from Guru Nanak College Dhanbad spoke on social prejuces in Conversations Matter: Women, Society and Prejudice on 25th July 2020. It was an interactive session with highly enthusiastic participation by the students.
  6. SPEECH COMPETITION:A speech competition PAHAL was organised on 28th July 2020 on Women and Social Prejudice. Dr M. Gouri of GITAM School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Hyderabad was the judge of the event.

 

 

2019-2020

  1. ANNUAL INDUCTION DAY: On 13th Nov 2019, Women’ Cell organised it first event of the session, GUFTAGU : COME AND TALK AN INTERACTIVE SESSION on Gender Discrimination. The programme began with an inaugural address by the co-ordinator Dr. Kauser Tasneem. The key-note adder was delivered by Dr Neha Tiwari. The student representatives of the cell gave a beautiful ppt presentation on Gender Discrimination. The presentation was executed by Shreya Chakraborty, Shreesti Kumari, Anisha Kumari and Ekta Dogra. Jashama Afroz, an English Hons student sang a song. Dr Md Zakaria, Principal and Patron of Women’s Cell was the chief guest of the event. The programme was conducted by Shreya Chakraborty and Shreesti Kumari. 240 student including 113 boys and 127 girls were present in the event.
  2. LITERACY DAY: Literacy Day was observed on November 15th by distribution of notebooks and stationaries among the children of the slum area near Aam Bagan. The agenda was to make them conscious of the importance. and need for education. The student representatives of the cell participated in the event
  3. DENTAL HEALTH CHECK-UP CAMP: Women’s Cell in association with Cure Mantra Healthcare organised a Dental Health Check-up camp “SAVING SMILES” on 24th November 2019 from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm under the supervision of Dr Heena Khanam and Dr Priyanka Kumari. The camp benefitted more than 200 students including 119 girls and 94 boys of the campus. The dental camp began with a small talk on dental hygiene and oral care.
  4. ANNUAL ESSAY COMPETITION: Women’s Cell organised it annual Essay Writing competition “Remembering the Stawart : Inculcating Pride in Indian Womenhood” on 21st Nov 2019. This year’s theme was “WOMEN IN CHANDRAYAAN 2” 35 boys and 42 girls too part in the event. Dr Subhash Gupta, Dr. Shahbaaz Alam, Dr. Om Prakash, Professor Saket Kumar were the judges of the event. Essay competition was held in Hindi, English, Urdu and Bangla categories.
  5. ANNUAL COMIC SCRIPTING COMPETITION: Women’s Cell organised its annual Comic Scripting Competition Competition GOONJ on 21st Nov 2019. The theme of the event was “WOMEN AGAINST WOMEN”
  6. NO FIRE COOKING COMPETITION: No Fire Cooking Competition was held on 23rd November. Dr Md Reyaz was the chief guest of the event. In this category, 2 events were held – Salad Dressing and Sandwich Making. 112 students participated in the event that was held in the courtyard. The judges of the event were Dr Anwar Shahab and Dr Fakhruddin.
  7. POSTER MAKING COMPETITION: Poster Making COMPETITION held on 23rd November 2019 in the central courtyard. The theme was Gender Equity. 46 students participated including 24 boys and 22 girls. The posters were displayed in the campus. Prof. Yahiya Ibrahim Head of the department of English was the judge for the event. Dr Md Zakaria was the Chief Guest.
  8. ANNUAL LECTURE/TALK: Annual Lecture /Talk Plaiting Ideas: Women and Well-Being was held on 30th November 2019. The speaker for the vent was Dr Mousumi Ghosh who enlightened the students on “Anaemia in Youth.
Achievements
Measures to promote gender equity:  
  1. The Women’s Cell of the college has, in its years of working, successfully lived up to its vision of ‘Harmony through Equality of Respect’. It has succeeded in fostering harmony in the campus by ensuring respect towards both men and women through gender activism.
  2. The Women’s Cell has paid significant attention to causes of women in the campus and has successfully carried out its mission of women’s empowerment by bringing up issues of women’s physical and mental health, hygiene, nutrition, personal safety, educational opportunities, and legal rights from time to time.
  3. The gender sensitization drives by Women’s Cell has regularly included men and encouraged their participation in gender conversations with the aim of broadening the base of the Cell’s activities and bringing about positive shifts in mind-set and ideology.
  4. Over the years, the Women’s Cell has drawn attention to gender stereotyping and the harmful effects of patriarchy on the growth and development of young men. Today, male students who understand and realise that they, as much as women, are the victims of patriarchy and capitalism, are an important part of the Cell.
  5. The Women’s Cell has been responsible for inculcating a historical awareness of women’s role in Indian history and culture through its annual essay competition on ‘Remembering the Stalwarts’ that has led students to research on women who have been an important part of -nation-building.
  6. An awareness about social evils is created by Comic Scripting Competition.
  7. This session the cell started its extension activities to train the students for social responsibility. Three events were organised

  11. An awareness about health is generated by a Health Workshop “Sweat it Out” organized on 23rd November 2022 and a talk on Health Psychology was also organized on the same day.
  12. To instil leadership qualities among students, a Speech Competition was organised on 25th November 2022 to celebrate International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
  13. Gender sensitization is carried on by Guftagu : acounselling session and the topic was “A Conversation on Gender Roles and How to Question Them” held on 14th Dec 2022.
  14. The annual Lecture/Talk i.e. “Plaiting Ideas : Women and well-Being is an annual event is organised to sensitize students on gender centric issues. A talk on Prevension of Sexual Harrassment on 19th Dec 2022.
  15. As an Ode to Strength, International Women’s Day was observed on 16th March
