Department of Chemistry

Post Graduate Department of Chemistry is one of the premier constituent Department in the faculty of science in Karim City College, Jamshedpur, affiliated to Kolhan University, Chaibasa. Chemistry department was established in 1978 in Karim City College under the leadership of Dr. Mohammad Zakaria. Under Graduate and Post Graduate Programmes are run by the Department. Department is upgraded with modern scientific equipment funded by college and University Grant Commission. Department has significant contribution in the field of chemical science.

Departmental laboratory is fully equipped with undergraduate and post graduate level students. A departmental library is also working in the chemistry department with more than 300 books and Journals of National and International repute.

Faculty members have many research Publications in the National and International Journals and participation in National and International seminar sponsored by UGC and CSIR.

A minor research project funded by UGC was successfully completed by Dr. Md. Hasan Imam Warsi and new proposals are also prepared for coming session by faculty members. Department has excellent University result.

A  Ph.D. research work on isolation, structure determination and characterization of compounds extracted from medicinal plants was successfully completed in our departmental laboratory supported by Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow.

In 2011 department was funded by UGC to organize celebration of Year of chemistry in which inter college students seminar was organized and Guest Science Lecture was delivered by eminent Scientist of National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR) Jamshedpur.

Department has a routine work to organize departmental seminar for students and teachers and also conduct Scientific and industrial tour to the students in the organizations like National Metallurgical Laboratory and Uranium mines of UCIL, Jadugoda and other scientific research institutions.

In future we are gearing up for Post Graduate teaching and enrollment of Ph.D. students with faculty members to conduct research work in the departmental laboratory.

Vision and Mission of the Department

  • We are engaged to provide the students with concept and knowledge of chemical science for their need of our country.
  • We are working as mentor of budding scientist and creating interest among students to opt their carrier as research scholar, Scientist and academician to achieve the target of the nation as a Developed country up to 2025.
  • We have try to create sensitivity to face the challenges in life both in academic field as well as in their personal life and how to achieve their goals.
  • We are working on the principle of green chemistry to develop design and produce cost competitive chemical products and processes that attain and minimize pollution and convert our waste as future raw material.

  1. Undergraduate course in Chemical Science. (B. Sc. Chemistry Honours and elective chemistry for other Honours Subject)
  2. Post Graduate course in Chemical Science with specialization in the field of Organic chemistry and Inorganic chemistry.

Activities (Last 5 Years)

  • On 05th of December 2018 we organized a student seminar on the topic “Applications of Organic Synthesis” in which students of B. Sc. Sem. III and Part III participated with their ideas on the topic.
  • A field project of River water analysis is conducted by dept. of chemistry at Kopali village and Domuhani on 12th2019 by our part III chemistry Hons students; supervise by Dr. Khurshid A. Khan and Dr. H. K. Shaw.
  • Organise Departmental Class Test of B. Sc. Sem. I, II and Part III students on 16, 17 and 18 Jan 2019.
  • Department of Chemistry organized a seminar on National Science day on 28th February 2019. Topic of the seminar “Contribution of Indian scientist in modern India”
  • A career counseling is organized on 10.04.2019 by guest faculty Dr. Nazrul Islam, Assistant Professor Jamshedpur Workers’ College, Jamshedpur.
  • Consultancy project from BLOSSOMS AROMATICS was completed by the department from 17th May to 21st May 2019.

Project: Extraction of Essential Oil from mint plant and eucalyptus leaves.

  • In last 5 years department has excellent record of 95% successful completion of B. Sc. Chemistry Hons. Degrees with more than 80% secure 1st Class & most of our PG students get 1st class in the University result.
  • Department provides Job opportunity to our UG and PG students in the campus selection derive organized by the college. In the prestigious industrial groups like Vedanta, Tata Power, Jindal, ACC etc.
  • Large numbers of our students are engaged in the different project of NML under the guidance of NML Scientists.
  • Our students Nityanand of UG 2019 batch, after pursuing their Master’s degree and completing a project in NML was selected in advance research as research scholar in Malaysia.
  • Our student Manas Mandal of UG 2020 batch, after pursuing their master degree from NIT Trichy was selected as research scholar in Malaysia.
  • Our student Akif Raza of UG 2020 batch, after pursuing their graduation was qualified in JAM 2021, scored all India rank 1185.
