Department of History

About the Department

The department was formed in 1961. Dr Manzoor Ahmad joined the college as the departmental Head in 1967. His chief historical interest is in the International Affairs and Modern History.  He did his Ph.D from Bhagalpur University. Dr Ahmad was awarded Greek Government scholarship and was sent by the Ministry of Education, Government of India for study on Greek history at the University of Athens during 1974-75. From Greece he went on academic trips to Rome, Switzerland, West Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. He contributed a number of scholarly articles to distinguished journals. Dr Manzoor Ahmad retired in 2004. Dr Indrasen Singh joined the department in 1988 and Dr Anwar Alam joined the  in 1988. Dr Indrasen Singh became the Head of the department in 2004. He did his Masters from Gorakhpur University in 1980 and Ph.D from Ranchi University in 1992. Dr Indrasen Singh retired in 2023. Dr Kauser Tasneem joined the department in 2010. She has done her Masters fromPatna University and Ph.D from Magadh University. Dr Mohammad Shahnawaz joined the department in 2023. He did his Masters and Ph.D from Aligarh Muslim University.

Apart from the teachers working on permanent posts the department has utilised the services of guest faculty.  Dr S N Singh is also presently working in the department.

The department was formed in 1961. Presently UG courses are conducted. The department conducts several activities throughout the year to motivate the students, increase their interest in the subjects as well as broaden their perspectives about the subject. The new session begins with the Introductory lecture. The department conducts two Class Tests every session. Student seminars are held every year. Parents Teachers meeting is organized annually. In the session 2020-2021, annual lecture series entitled Heritage: A Journey into the Past was started. With the 1st speaker being Prof. Mohammad Sajjad of Centre for Advanced Study in History. During the session 2022-2023 Adivtiya: The annual event of the department was started which included Movie screening, Quiz, Student Seminar and Lecture. Through various activities, an attempt is made to instil analytical thinking in the process of re-construction of History among the students.

Vision

The History Department aims to make students aware of the past and instill positivism and values in them. Only a critical understanding of the past will enable the students to understand the present and help them look towards the future. The Department seeks to develop its students so that they have a good perspective on the past and can confidently handle difficulties in the present and future. The department works to support students’ learning so they can become informed, engaged, and thoughtful citizens.

Departmental Activity

Session: 2023-2024

  1. Speech Competition: The department organised a Speech Competition on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. The topic was Gandian Philosopy and its Relevance in the Contemporary World. Ayush Kumar and Ayushman Sharma won the best speaker award in English category and Deepa Rani Bagti inHindi category. Ten students participated in the event. Dr Md Mujaidul Hoque was the judge of the event.
  2. Farewell Ceremony: Farewell ceremony for the Semester 6 students was organised on 5th October 2023 organized by Semester 1, 2 and 4 students. A cultural event was organised to celebrate the event Riya Batt and Abijit Pingua were declared King and Queen of Farewell. Ayushman and Sania of Semester 1 conducted the event. A Fashion Show was organized which was judged by Dr Uddam Singh of the department of Psychology.
  3. Adiwtiya 2.0: The department organized its annual event Adiwtiya: Indian Culture and Heritage on 2nd March 2024.
  4. Quiz: 14 students comprising 7 teams participated in Quiz. Rohit Kumar and Monawwar Alam won the 1st prize and the team including Rubi Kumari and Khushnuma Rahman won the 2nd
  5. Student Seminar: Student seminar was also organized on the occasion of Adiwtiya. The team comprising Ayushman and Shania won the 1st prize and The team of Rubi Kumari and Sonal Kumari won the second prize. The judge of the event was Dr Shahbaz Ansari of the department of Urdu. Dr Mohammad Reyaz addressed the students and stressed the need of organising such events.
  6. Internal Test: Internal Test for Semester II was organised on 9th January (Major 2), 11th January (Major 3) and 13th January (Minor 2A)
  7. Internal Test: Internal Test for Semester 1 was organised on 3rd February (Minor 1A) and 8th February (Major 1)
  8. Student’s Talk: Student’s Talk was organised on 5th March 2024 where students of Minor History talked about their perception of History.
  9. Internal Test: The Internal Test for Semester 4 was conducted on 5th December (CC 8), 7th December (CC 9) and 11th December (CC 10)
  10. Internal Test: The Internal Test for Semester 5 was held on 24th April (CC 11 and CC 12) and 2nd May (DSE 1 and DSE 2)
  11. Internal Test: The Internal test for Semester 6 was held on 30th July (CC 13), 1st August (CC 14) and 2nd August (DSE 3)
  12. Speech Competition: A speech competition was organized on 28th June 2024 to Celebrate the Cultural Legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. 10 students participated in the event. Dr Mohammad Reyaz congratulated the department for organizing the event. Dr B.N Tripathy was the chief guest of the event.

 

SESSION:  2022-2023

  1. LECTURE: The department of History in collaboration with the department of Political Science organised a lecture on “Indian Emissaries and Entrepreneurs in 18th century London. The resource person was Dr Arup Kumar Chatterjee, professor of English, Jindal Global Law School, Sonepat, Haryana on 7th July 2022. Dr Md Reyaz, the principal of Karim City College welcomed the guest. The moderator of the programme was Dr Kauser Tasneem. Dr Anwar Shahab, HOD of the department of Political Science introduced the resource person and vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Indrasen Singh, the HOD of the department of History. The programme concluded with an interactive question answer session.
  2. FAREWELL: for semester 6 students was held on 16 August 2022 in the college auditorium. Semester 1 and Semester 3 students were the hosts of the event. The programme began by a welcome address by the HOD Dr Indrasen Singh. The principal of Karim City college addressed the students and encouraged them to work hard as hard work is the key to success. A small cultural event was organised by the students of the department. A ppt presentation entitles memories was a part of the event. Sushil Hembrom and Sunny conducted the event. Tanzeel Kazmi was declared Miss Farewell and Ravi Kumar Saw was declared Mr Farewell. The programme concluded by distribution of mementos to the outgoing students.
  3. COIN EXHIBITION VISIT: Semester II students went to visit the coin exhibition that was organised in the Tulsi Bhavan, Bistupur on 8th January 2022. The students were accompanied by the teachers of the department Dr Kauser Tasneem and Dr S. N Singh. It was a wonderful experience for the students and they got to see unique coins that were exhibited. Some students bought some coins also.
  4. ANNUAL EVENT: ADWITIYA: Annual event of the department of History was organised on 10th Jan 2023 in the college auditorium. ADWITIYA: Bhartiya Sanskriti aur Virasat involving Semester 2, 4 and Major 1 students. The programme started with the screening of the movie Bose. It was followed by Quiz involving 6 teams of 12 members. The result was declared on the basis of 6 rounds. The Quiz was followed by Student seminar in which 6 teams consisting of 12 students participated. First prize in Quiz was won by the team comprising of Bapun Kundu and Abhishek Kumar. Second prize was given to the team comprising of Ayush Kumar and Sana Wakil. Student seminar comprised of 6 teams. The first presentation was by Sana Wakil and Babita and their topic was Buddhism. The second presentation was by Manav Singh and Nishant Tirky on Dance forms of India. Sridhar Mishra and Tayyaba Fatima gave a presentation on Jainism. The next presentation on Ancient Indian Architecture by Ayush Kumar and Bapun Kundu. The next presentation was on Bhakti movement by Priyanka Kumari and Deepa Rani. The last presentation was on Hinduism and its Impact on Indian Culture by Sunny Kumar and Himanshu Kumar. The judge for the event was Dr Anwar Shahab, Head of the department of Political Science and The first prize was given to Sridhar Mishra and Tayyaba Fatima and Second prize was given to Sana Fatima and Babita Soren. The event was well attended by the History Hons students of first, second and fourth semester. Dr Indrasen Singh, Dr Kauser Tasneem, Dr Sandhya Sinha and Dr Farzana Anjum were present in the audience to encourage the students.
  5. Alumni Speak: 4 alumni visited the college and interacted with the students and shared their experience and provided guidance to the students on 26th Aril 2023. Pooja, Shaheen Perveen, Mita and Anum interacted with the students

SESSION: 2021-2022

  1. Student Seminar: Student seminar was held on 9th August for 58 students of semester I. They had to select any topic from their syllabus.
  2. Student Seminar: Student seminar was held on 24th August 2021 for 62 students of semester VI. They had to select topics from DSE 3.
  3. Gandhi Jayanti: Gandhi Jayanti was observed by the department on 1st Students shared their views on Gandhian Ideology and its Significance. It was an online event due to the Pandemic.
  4. Farewell: Farewell was given to the final semester students on 22nd November by the students of semester 1 and semester IV in the college auditorium.
  5. Movie Screening: The movie “Gandhi” was screened in the Media Appreciation Room for B.A Part III students on 19th January 2021.
  6. Alumni Interaction: The students interacted with the alumni Shantu Kumar who shared his experiences within the college on 1st April 2022.
  7. Student’s Talk: The students of the department spoke on the relevance and the necessity of History on 14th May 2022. It was an interactive session where the students were allowed to express their views.
  8. Parents Teachers Meeting: The department organized a Parent Teachers Meeting for semester I, III and VI students on 18th May 2022 in the college auditorium to discuss academic progress of the students for their overall development.
  9. Web Lecture: A Web Lecture was organized by the department on ”Socio Cultural Awakening 2600 years Ago that Changed the World.” On 31st May 2022. The resource person was Ruchi Pritam, writer on heritage sites and history. 100 students of the History Honours benefitted from the event and it was an enriching event for them.

SESSION:  2020-2021

  1. Web Lecture: A web lecture was organized on 15th July 2020 on “Epidemic & Pandemic: A Historical Analysis. The resource person was Dr Nripendra Kumar Shrivastava, Professor, PG Department of History, Magadh University, Bodh Gaya.
  2. Gandhi Jayanti: Gandhi Jayanti was observed by the department on 1st Students shared their views on Gandhian Ideology and its Significance. It was an online event due to the Pandemic.
  3. Viva Voca: Viva Voca of Semester VI students held on 7th November 2020.
  4. Student Seminar: Student seminar was held on 9th January 2021 for the students of semester I. They had to select any topic from their syllabus.
  5. Heritage: A lecture series was inaugurated by the department under the name of Heritage: A Journey into the Past and its first lecture was organized on 10th March 2021 in the auditorium. The topic was Studying Modern India: From Colonialism to the Contemporary Times. The resource person was Professor Mohammad Sajjad, Centre for Advanced Study in History, AMU, Aligarh.

SESSION: 2019-2020

  1. Introductory Lecture: The students were formally introduced to their syllabusThe head of the department welcomed the students. Each teacher of the department briefed the students about the syllabus. The distribution of the syllabus was presented to the students.
  2. Student Seminar: A student Seminar was held of Semester I students. Eight students took part in it. The topic of the seminar was on “The Glory of Ancient Indian Culture” It was held on 10th August 2019 in the Room Number 16. The Chief Guest of the seminar was Dr Md Zakaria, principal, Karim City College. 12 students took part in the seminar. Dr Indrasen Singh, the head of the department of History welcomed the guests and the programme was conducted by Neha Singh and Pooja of B.A Sem III. 32 students participated in the event.

  6. Visit to the Coin Museum: The students of the Semester I, Semester III and B.A Part III were taken to the Coin Museum 13th January 2020 where they came to see and know about coins and numismatics.
  7. Visit to the Tribal Culture Centre: The students were also taken to the Tribal Culture Centre on 13th January 2020.
  8. Web Lecture: A Web Lecture was organized by the department on 15th May 2020. The resource person was Dr Anjana Singh, Assistant Professor and HOD, PG Department of History, Nirmala College, Ranchi University. The topic was “Partition and the Raj: The Bloody Legacy.”
  9. Web Lecture: A Web Lecture was organized by the department on 6th June 2020. The resource person was Dr Priyanka, Assistant Professor, Patna Women’s College, Patna. The topic was “The Indian Renaissance and Raja Ram Mohan Roy.”
  10. Web Lecture: A Web Lecture was organized by the department on “Mahatma Gandhi’s Arrival in Indian Politics” on 30th May 2020. The resource person was Prof. Mrinmoy Sarkar, Assistant Professor and HOD, Department of History, Barabazar Bikram Tudu Memorial College, Sidho Kanho Birsa University.
  11. Webinar: The department organized a Webinar on 16th June 2020. The resource person was Dr Chandan Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of History, Markham College of Commerce, Hazaribagh. The topic of the lecture was “The Role of Press in the National Movement.”

SESSION 2018-2019

  1. Teacher’s Day: The students of Semester I observed Teachers Day on 5th September 2018 by lighting the lamp. Students talked about the importance of the day. Students spoke about the importance of observing the day and its historical significance as well as its cultural importance.
  2. Student Seminar: A student Seminar was held of Semester I students. Eight students took part in it. The topic of the seminar was on “Indian Culture and Heritage” It was held on 12th October 2018 in the Room Number 16. The Chief Guest of the seminar was Dr Md Zakaria, principal, Karim City College. 12 students took part in the seminar. Dr Indrasen Singh, the head of the department of History welcomed the guests and the programme was conducted by Neha Singh and Pooja of B.A Sem I. 12 students participated in the event.

  8. Farewell : Farewell was given to the B.A Part III students by the students of B.A Part I and B.A Part II students on 13th April 2018. It was small event where a short programme for the outgoing batch was organized with two songs and sharing of experience by three Part 3 students. The programme was held in the Auditorium Dr I.S Singh, HOD Department of History spoke to the students on this occasion. was attended by Dr Aftab Alam Ansari, Dr Anwar Shahab, Dr Ejaz Ahmad, Dr Fakhruddin Ahmad etc.
